Local, Easy Walk in Coniston!

Views on the Cumbria Way section of this walk
While many of you are coming on holiday to slog up mountains and scramble up scree, there are some who may enjoy a more tranquil, yet still rewarding, local walk. Look no further than this little gem of a walk – it’s even ideal on rainy days or days when you still want to get out but need to give the poor old legs a bit of a rest. It still takes just over an hour, but that’s nothing by Lakeland standards!
To start the walk, head into the village centre and just after passing the Black Bull, you come to the Co-Op and there is a road that leads up between them. Follow this road to the top (this is the only real slog on the journey) and then just as the road curves round to the left, you will see a signpost to your right saying Elterwater. Follow this road – it runs high up but parallel to the road and is framed by gorgeous woodland and slopes of mountains.

This Path runs Parallel to the Road
Keep going for approximately half a mile and on your right hand side you will see a kissing gate and signposts leading you across the road. Head straight down the road opposite for a while, before branching off right on the Cumbria Way and starting to head back in the direction of Coniston. The views really are wonderful and open right up – and at the very end of the walk you see a peek of Coniston Water in the distance.

Views to Coniston Water
Follow the Cumbria Way all the way back into Coniston and you will arrive at Shepherds Bridge by the Sports and Social Centre. Turn left here and then right at the end of the road and shortly thereafter you will see Ruskin Avenue back on your left hand side.
I totally love this walk – and it’s fantastic as a quick walk in the evening too, especially if you are exercising your four-legged friends!
Happy Hiking!
