Limbering up to Levers Water …

Levers Water from Puddleduck House in Coniston The Lake District

If you’re up for a totally enthralling walk that gives you awe-inspiring views within a very short space of time, then take a trip up to Levers Water.  You can combine this with a route that heads further on up to Coniston Old Man, or you can simply enjoy Levers Water by itself, for a 2 hour round trip with a picnic by the water!

It certainly feels like a proper hike in itself as the gradient is fairly steep, but it’s totally worth it and within a short distance from Puddleduck House, you will feel like you are in the middle of nowhere!

The Walk

To start the walk, head to the Co-Op in the middle of the village and take the road up to the left hand side of it.  Follow this road all the way to the top where you will see footpath signs.  Turn left here and follow the route and the entrance road all the way up to the Youth Hostel.

The Coniston mountain range then starts to loom above you and the scenery all around is just stunning.

Resting at Coniston

Taking a little rest just before the zigzag to Levers Water

Just past the Youth Hostel, the road seems to fork (though there is no access allowed to the left) and you take the footpath to the right, which zigzags all the way up to Levers Water.

Coming back down (unless you want to carry on up to Coniston Old Man via Prison Band and Swirl How), when you reach the little bridge over the church beck, you can cross the bridge and come back into the village via the road that leads past the Sun Inn, for a little variation on your route.

Don’t forget your OS Map … and a picnic!

Enjoy!
